Results of Annual Al-Awda San Diego Chapter Board Elections

Al-Awda San Diego is pleased to report the successful conclusion of its annual chapter board elections which took place on October 4, 2009 at the Al-Awda Center. The meeting was attended by nineteen chapter members. Anis Zubi and Mazen Al-Moukdad of Al-Awda Orange County observed the elections. The meeting began with a review of the chapter's work over the last year. A financial report was presented and discussed. This was followed by a discussion of some of the priorities for the following year. The elections then took place.

The following are the results:

Two chapter coordinators and representatives to the National Coordinating Committee of Al-Awda, The Palestine Right to Return Coalition were elected. They are: Aida Williams and Zahi Damuni.

Additionally, the following coordinators were elected:

Treasurer - Janan Alaqqad
Community Outreach - Mona Kadah
Media and Library - Ahlam Shalabi
Website - Ramzi El-Khater
Graphics/Advertising - Alia Hasan
Cultural - Manal Swairjo
UCSD Students - Leena Barakat
SDSU Students - Amanda Nasser
CSU San Marcos Students - Janan Alaqqad

A grant writing sub-committee was also created at the meeting. This committee includes Ahlam Muhtaseb, Manal Swairjo, Mahmoud Zubaidi, Leena Barakat and Zahi Damuni. The purpose of this committee is to identify appropriate grant awarding agencies and to write and submit applications to
strengthen the refugee support and other ongoing programs.

Members of the chapter also recommended that discussions be initiated with Al-Awda's National Coordinating Committee to better address nation-wide the needs of Palestinian families arriving in the US from the refugee camps on the Iraq Syria border.

Al-Awda San Diego thanks last year's chapter board including its outgoing members for their dedication and hard work over the past year, and wishes the new board success in its work and in meeting the continuing challenges ahead.
